The Offside

Myrtle Beach FC is a team in the National Premier Soccer League, an amateur league that would be comparable to a 4th division of soccer in the United States. MBFC was only founded in 2011, so it is not surprising that few, if any, know much about this team.
Despite the lack of history and attention, Myrtle Beach FC steals the show by signing with Danish sports apparel brand Hummel, which designed these very good looking kits for the team. Though relatively simple, the kits also feature a very clean, solid look that make them very pleasant to the eye, as well as making the team look very classy when strolling out onto the pitch of Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, their home in South Carolina.
Developments like these make me optimistic for the future of soccer in the United States, as more international brands are providing better quality uniforms throughout multiple soccer programs in the United States. Here’s hoping Myrtle Beach FC wear these kits with pride on their way to a league championship.

I’m thinking about doing a series of these.  Probably not the final copy; whipped this one up pretty quickly. Not sure if I’m happy with it.

Baseball is here!

And The Offside will bring you all things baseball as the new 2012 season begins!

The 2012 Major League Baseball season officially opened last week with a two-game split between the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners in Japan. But all eyes were on the matchup between the defending World Series champions St. Louis Cardinals and the new-look Miami Marlins at the sparkling new Marlins Park. The champs opened up the season with a 4-1 victory, in which starter Kyle Lohse had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. Most importantly, the monstrosity in center field that is the Marlins’ Home Run Feature did not go off, as no Marlins hit a home run. It was exciting to finally get to see professional baseball under way.

The Cubs season opener will be later today at 1:20 PM CST, and here at The Offside, we’ll be covering them (as well as the White Sox) throughout the entire season! Keep on tuning in to The Offside, only on Radio DePaul, Chicago’s College Connection!

Lights - “Toes”

The Offside is not only about sports - it’s about sampling new music and the like. Now, this song isn’t that new, but it’s still worthy of featuring on the show. I’m lowkey addicted to it! :D

If you have any new song recommendations, please make sure to send them my way!

In Cubs news

The Cubs are finalizing their roster today, and among the players sent to Iowa was starter Randy Wells, who is among my favorite Cubs. It’s kinda sad to see him being sent down to the minors in spite of a good spring training, but with the emergence of Jeff Samardzija as a good starter, and the arrivals of Paul Maholm as the No. 3 and Chris Volstad as the No. 4/5 (after an excellent spring training), it was going to be tough for Wells to make the team as part of the rotation.

In any case, Wells said this was a “wake-up call” for him, and after a few relatively mediocre years after his breakout 2009 season (and a late series of good performances in 2011), this may very well be a positive for him. In case of injury, he should be the first starter called up. Starting at Iowa could also be better than becoming a reliever in the majors, as he can be stretched out properly as a starter this way, and thus have less of a problem if called back into the rotation at any given point.
